A NEWLY formed Nausori ratepayers group once saaid it would field candidates to contest all 10 seats in the Nausori Town Council election on December 1, 1984
This was published in the Fiji Times on Thursday October 25, 1984.
Fifteen members of the group decided this at a meeting held in Nausori.
The interim chairman Mohammed Ikbal said the association did not want to affiliate itself with any political party.
The Alliance and the National Federation Party members also contested the elections.
Both parties according to the article had planned to field a joint slate of candidates.
Mr Ikbal said another meeting was to be held to iron out minor points and to draw up the final list of candidates.
“A survey were have done shows that the majority of the people want ratepayers’ officials to represent them in the council and not any political party,” he said.
Mr Ikbal said the association was concerned at the manner in which the affairs of the council were being handled.
“Nausori is being treated as if it is a part of Suva, and we would like to put a stop to this,” Mr Ikbal said.
He said the Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Edward Beddoes and the Nausori Town Council administrator, Hafeez Khan knew very little about Nausori, and how to run it.
