Leader of the Opposition Inia Seruiratu has called on the Government to urgently review transport arrangements for healthcare workers serving Fiji’s rural and maritime communities following the rescue of six health workers who went missing in Lau waters.
Mr Seruiratu expressed relief that the six healthcare workers had been found safe and thanked all those involved in the search and rescue operation.
“My sincere thanks go to the Republic of Fiji Navy, the crew of Lomaiviti Princess 12 and all government agencies, search teams, mariners and communities whose tireless efforts brought this search to a successful end. This outcome is a testament to the courage and cooperation of our maritime community,” he said.
However, Mr Seruiratu said the incident should prompt a review of the safety measures in place for frontline workers travelling to the outer islands.
“This incident must also serve as a wake-up call. Our healthcare workers who serve in rural and maritime communities carry out essential, often difficult work far from the resources and support available in urban centres. They deserve nothing less than safe, reliable and accessible transport as they travel to serve our people in the outer islands,” he said.
The Opposition Leader called for an urgent review of transport arrangements, including the provision of seaworthy vessels, appropriate safety equipment, reliable communication systems and emergency contingency plans.
“Our frontline health workers put their lives on the line to serve rural and maritime communities. The least we can do is ensure their journeys to and from these postings are safe,” Mr Seruiratu said.
He also acknowledged the anxiety experienced by the families of the six health workers and said he was thankful they would now be safely reunited with their loved ones.
