The new $5 million state-of-the-art school complex at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School in Nabua, Suva will now be used by 834 students after it was officially opened yesterday.

The complex was opened by the Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama.

Funded by the Gujarat Education Society of Fiji, the complex accommodates the school’s chemistry, biology and physics laboratories, a few classrooms, the school library, the technical drawing room, a computer lab and a few other offices.

The complex also has a pavilion that will be used during school sporting events. Gujarat Education Society of Fiji’s president, Kamlesh Kumar said the biggest challenge for the society was the funding of the project.

He said donations received for the project was fully used in construction works.

“It is a rewarding experience to finally see this project come to fruition,” he said.

He thanked those that contributed to the work for the success of the project.

Mr Bainimarama said what the Gujarat Education Society had accomplished with the new facility would set a standard for education in Fiji.

“We all know that quality education thrives on high standards,” he said.

“We need to set high standards for our children, and we need to set high standards for ourselves — for the quality of our instruction, for the way we design and equip our facilities, and for the example we set.”

He said the new Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School complex was a “jewel in the crown”.

“It is outfitted for the computer age. It has modern classrooms, science laboratories and teacher facilities,” he said.

“It has pleasant places for students to gather informally. It promises its students a fine start in life if they choose to take advantage of what is here, and it can accommodate more students in the future.”
