SEKOVE Vuniwaqa and Noah Reid from Savusavu Secondary School are hoping to qualify for the Coca-Cola games during the Easter Athletics Competition at the HFC Bank Stadium today.
The two athletes missed out on the qualifying times at the Cakaudrove zone competition but are making one final push to book their spots for the Fiji Finals.
Savusavu Secondary School head coach and head of department PEMAC, Nawi Rokodulu, said they brought a total of 10 athletes this year, with hopes that the final two will make it through.
“Yes, exactly,” he said when asked if the Easter competition was their last chance to qualify.
“This is the competition where we are hoping these two boys can make it. They’ve been working hard and we’re giving them this chance.”
Preparation for the team has not been easy.
“We didn’t do any off-season training because our athletes are based in their villages and it’s hard to get them to one place.
“Financially, it was a challenge. Fundraising during Easter is not easy, but with support from our sports team and the community, we managed to get here,” Rokodulu said.
The team of 10 arrived yesterday and had their first training.
