YOUTH and Sports Minister Jese Saukuru says his decision on whether he will contest the next general election will ultimately depend on his vanua.
Mr Saukuru said he was nominated by his vanua and would return to it after completing his current term.
“With me, I’m a vanua-based person. It depends on the vanua,” he said.
He said his intention was to complete his term before returning to his vanua, which would determine who should represent it next in Parliament.
“I was nominated by my vanua. So after I finish my term, I’m going to go back to the vanua and hand over.”
Mr Saukuru said the vanua could decide to select another candidate if it did not want him to continue.
“If we have somebody else, this is the time to pick,” he said, adding he would accept the decision made by his vanua.
His comments come as attention turns to the next general election and potential candidates.
He did not confirm whether he would seek another term.
The minister said he would respect whatever decision was made after his current term ends.
