The Fiji Teachers Association says it is receiving close to 100 applications a day from teachers seeking salary assistance as they struggle with the rising cost of living.
This was shared by the Fijian Teachers Association’s (FTA) general secretary, Paula Manumanunitoga, saying the association has relaxed its salary assistance policy to help members facing financial difficulties between pay days.
“Every day we receive an application of close to 100 people asking for salary assistance due to their needs at home.”
Mr Manumanunitoga says for many iTaukei teachers, a significant portion of their salaries goes towards traditional, church and family obligations.
“For an indigenous Fijian, you would know there are traditional obligations, family obligations that they must cater for.
“When they receive their pay, the pay is not enough because a big part of it has been used up, so they are left with almost nothing.”
He says these are among the main welfare issues currently affecting teachers.
Mr Manumanunitoga says the FTA was previously cautious about providing salary assistance, but with the rising cost of living, the association has reviewed its policy and is now providing greater assistance to teachers across the country.
“The cost of goods are rising, and we have relaxed the policy a bit for salary assistance. I think it is probably the most demanded assistance nowadays. It is an everyday happening.”
The FTA Welfare Society also provides assistance to teachers whose contracts have expired and are waiting for renewal, helping them meet their financial needs and support their families during the transition.
