VILLAGERS in Vatukaroa, Cakaudrove, who have been forced to walk long distances for water when nearby sources dry up, are set to receive a more reliable supply through a new water project.
The project aims to bring a dependable water source closer to the village and eventually extend supply to every household.
Senior health inspector Ifereimi Waqasese said most of the water sources near the village had dried up during prolonged dry weather, leaving villagers with limited options.
“For a village like Vatukaroa in Cakaudrove, there are a lot of water sources closer to this village. However, during dry weather, most of these water sources run dry,” he said.
A source that continues to provide water during dry periods has been identified for the village supply.
Mr Waqasese said the project would be carried out in two phases, with the first involving the installation of a tap closer to the village.
The second phase will involve installing a pump to ensure individual households have access to water.
Health Minister Dr Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu said the project was part of the Ministry of Health’s Water, Sanitation and Hygiene programme and was funded through its budget.
He said the project followed consultations with villagers and would improve access to an essential resource while helping reduce the risk of water-borne diseases.
