YOUTH and Sports Minister Jese Saukuru has urged eligible young Fijians to register to vote and take part in the democratic process.
Mr Saukuru said voting was one of the most important ways citizens could participate in democracy and influence Government decision-making.
While speaking at a grant presentation at the Scout Hall in Labasa, he said participation in elections was a fundamental democratic right.
“However, you must first register to vote,” Mr Saukuru said.
He said young people should register and get ready to exercise their right to vote.
“Young people have an important role to play in the country’s future and should be encouraged to participate in matters affecting their communities and the nation.”
His comments came as five young people and a youth club received financial assistance to establish or expand small businesses.
He said the welfare and development of young people remained one of the Government’s priorities.
He said young Fijians should have equal opportunities to participate, develop their potential and contribute to the nation.
He also urged young people receiving Government assistance to use the opportunity responsibly and remain committed to their goals.
