A team built on young talent, strong community ties and unwavering belief has announced itself on Fiji’s volleyball stage after the Rebels Volleyball Club defeated Redline volleyball club three sets to one at the Ratu Jone Senibici tournament last Saturday. The tournament had featured a total of 42 teams from around Suva.

The club upset tournament favorites Redline, marking a significant milestone for the community-based side and its emerging group of players.

Coaching staff Joshua Vulimailodoni said the victory represented a changing of the guard, with the club providing young athletes their first opportunity to compete on one of Fiji’s biggest volleyball stages.

“It really means a lot for these young boys to introduce themselves on a bigger platform,” he said.

The coach acknowledged the challenge posed by Redline, describing them as one of the country’s most experienced teams.

Beyond results on the court, the coach said volleyball had become an important tool for keeping young people engaged in positive activities.

He said the club aimed to provide an environment where youths could develop discipline, teamwork and purpose while steering them away from crime, drugs and other social issues.

“This is one way we can bring our youths together and help reduce crime in our community,” he said.

Vulimailodoni believes several players have the potential to progress to higher levels of volleyball, saying the squad possesses an abundance of talent.

He credited the team’s success to the strong relationships built away from the court, with family support and team bonding forming the foundation of the club’s culture.
