USP Raiders under-17 captain Tony Vakaloloma believes last Saturday’s 18-0 victory over Makoi Bulldogs can provide the platform for another strong campaign in the Vodafone Cup Eastern State Rugby League Clubs Competition.
The Round Seven clash at the USP Grounds saw the Raiders produce a disciplined defensive display, keeping Makoi scoreless from start to finish.
For Vakaloloma, the result was a reflection of the collective effort within the side.
“It was a good team effort,” Vakaloloma said.
The Raiders know what it takes to go deep into the competition.
Last year, they fought their way through to the final but fell short of claiming the title, an experience that has added motivation to their campaign this season.
Vakaloloma believes the lessons from that disappointment can help the young side handle the pressure as the competition progresses.
“We just have to look ahead to the next matches,” he said.
That focus was evident against Makoi, with the Raiders refusing to let their intensity drop and maintaining their defensive structure throughout the match.
The clean sheet was one of the biggest positives from the Round Seven outing, with Makoi unable to breach the Raiders’ defence.
