Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is seeking a replacement for Siromi Turaga as acting Attorney-General, with the Solicitor-General’s Office yet to recommend a suitably qualified lawyer from within Government.

Speaking to this newspaper yesterday, Mr Rabuka said he had asked the office to assess lawyers who were already elected members of Government before making a decision.

“I have not heard back from SG’s offices,” he said.

“I asked them to check on the lawyers in government right now, on whether they are qualified.

“And then I will select who is suitable. First of all, qualification and then suitability.”

When asked when an appointment could be expected, Mr Rabuka said he wanted the process completed as quickly as possible.

Mr Rabuka has indicated that whoever replaces Mr Turaga will also take on his other portfolios, including Acting Minister for Justice and Employment.

Meanwhile, public consultations on the Constitution Amendment Bill 2026 begin today, with the first session scheduled for 9am at the Suva Civic Centre.

A second consultation will be held at Vunimono High School hall in Nausori from 5pm to 8pm.

Mr Rabuka urged members of the public to listen to broadcasts in iTaukei, Hindi and English to understand the purpose of the consultations.

“The committee reviewing the Bill met again (yesterday) and have narrowed the issues it would address during consultations.”

Mr Rabuka said the consultations would focus on the Bill and its proposed third reading, with the aim of informing the public about the provisions that would return to Parliament for a vote after public views had been considered.
