THE Fiji Ridge to Reef (R2R) project was developed with the intention to maintain and enhance Fiji’s ecosystem goods and services.

UNDP pacific office in Fiji country director and head of Pacific Regional Policy and Program Bakhodir Burkhanov highlighted during a partnership signing between four non-government organisations (NGOs).

“The Fiji R2R project contributes directly to Sustainable Development Goal 2 through its fisheries, agricultural and forestry activities that will help achieve zero hunger global goal,” Mr Burkhanov said on Wednesday.

The Fiji Locally Managed Marine Areas (FLMMA) Network, World Wide Fund for Nature Pacific, The Pacific Islands Rainforest Foundation and USP’s Institute of Applied Sciences signed a partnership agreement for the delivery of the Fiji Ridge to Reef Project.

According to the agreement, the partners will undertake the activities that have been outlined in the Project’s work plan and budget.

The Fiji Ridge to Reef Project aims to preserve biodiversity, ecosystem services, sequester carbon, improve climate resilience and sustain livelihoods through a ridge to reef management of priority water catchments on the two main islands of Fiji.

The selected priority catchment areas are Ba River, Tuva River and Waidina River/Rewa Delta on Viti Levu and Labasa River, Vunivia River and Tunuloa district on Vanua Levu.

Funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the project is implemented by the Ministry of Waterways and Environment with support from the UNDP Pacific office in Fiji.
