Intermittent water supply which resulted in the disruption of classes is no longer an issue for students of Nakobo District School after the commissioning of a new $50,000 water system recently.

Over the years, disruption of classes had become a norm for the Cakaudrove school because of intermittent water supply.

School committee member Tarusila Lora said every time it rained in the area, the teachers and 120 students knew there would be no school that day.

“The water was untreated and so when it rained, teachers had no other choice but to send them home after contacting the authorities and this was a common situation in this school,” she said.

“Now that we have the new system, disruption of classes will no longer be an issue because we have a better and improved system.”

Ms Lora said teachers used to spend “a lot of money” to hire carriers to get water from neighbouring areas or rivers.

The project by Pleass Global Ltd, New Zealand Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Rotary Pacific Water for Life Foundation was taken up after a request from the school committee.

Rotary Pacific Water for Life Foundatio CEO Neil Maharaj said the project was part of their commitment to ensure rural communities had access to safe and clean drinking water Pleass Global Ltd rep Ashnil Dutt said the project was part of their corporate social responsibility program.

“It is part of our commitment in improving rural water supply to communities and schools,” he said.
