Processed foods

THE overdependence and heavy reliance on processed foods must be one obvious reason for the alarming death rates relating to NCDs for a small island nation such as Fiji.

Our towns and shops are flooded with processed foods and it seems there is no escape.

In fact, processed food items is basically in everyone’s shopping list and it would take a Herculean effort to reduce the consumption of these items.

A question one may ask is the health status of our diets.

Is it eating to grow or growing to eat?

The level of lethargy or lax attitude of our population is one obvious reason.

Many of us have provisions for backyard gardening yet so much of land remains unutilised or idle. Many people even do not buy vegetables regularly.

And with work commitments, there is little to no form of exercise and as a result there are deaths and an unhealthy population.

While many may argue that processed foods are convenient, readily available and a time saviour, the disadvantages it holds must never go unnoticed.

With so much additives, little nutritional value and high in calories, one may question whether we are eating health consciously or inviting death at a very early age. The wise choice lies with you.

I believe the human body is made to last at least a 100 years. This is slowly fading and becomes the most painful experience for the society.
