Fiji’s next president should be aged between 60 and 70 and physically fit enough to visit communities around the country, says Tailevu resident Livai Boginivalu.

He made the call during the public consultation on the draft amendments to the 2013 Constitution at Wailotua No. 1 Village on Wednesday.

He said the country’s head of State should be selected from the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) and be able to carry out official duties without depending heavily on others for assistance.

“Selection of President of Fiji should be within 60-70 years old, and don’t select someone that’s too old and not physically fit to carry out the duties of a president and not be carried around by helpers,” he said.

“He should be physically fit to visit his people around Fiji.”

His submission focused on the age, physical fitness and selection of the country’s president as part of the ongoing debate on proposed constitutional changes.

The committee is expected to consider the views raised during the consultation process as it reviews the proposed constitutional amendments.
