The foreign ministers of Australia, India, Japan and the United States yesterday announced a major new partnership to support port infrastructure development in Fiji.

The announcement was made during a Quad meeting in New Delhi.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong described the initiative as the strongest commitment yet by the Quad towards the Pacific region.

“We are also today announcing the strongest ever commitment from the Quad to the Pacific through the Quad Ports of the Future Partnership, where we are launching a pilot for port infrastructure in Fiji,” Wong said.

She said the project reflected the Quad’s ability to deliver high-quality infrastructure in response to Pacific priorities.

“It’s a practical demonstration of our collective ability to deliver high quality resilient infrastructure in partnership with the region.”

United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the initiative aimed to address insufficient port capacity in Pacific Island nations.

“We are announcing plans to work with Fiji,” Rubio said.
