POOR drainage has been blamed for flash floods that affected Savusavu town and residential areas yesterday morning. Residents said the downpour affected low-lying areas resulting in land slips along Lesiaceva Rd.

Larissa Kellenberger, a resident who lives along the road, said the rain was relentless for two hours beginning at 4am.

“All of a sudden our area got flooded, I think there was just too much water for the drain to keep,” she said.

Businessman Ravi Chaganlal said some shops were affected.

“But we were blessed that the rain stopped at about 6am and people started getting into town at about 8am,” he said.

“Business was affected because some workers didn’t turn up to work and traffic flow was also affected.”

Savusavu Town administrator Justin Hunter said he had raised the issue with road contractors.

“We have already discussed this and they will attend to it,” he said.

The Fiji Roads Authority said portions of Lesiaceva Rd were affected by floodwaters forcing a single lane route.

Divisional police commander North SSP Eparama Waqa said his team moved into town to monitor the movement of people ensuring that none got stuck in the flood.

According to the weather office, people in Labasa and Savusavu should expect occasional showers, isolated thunderstorms and heavy falls.
