THE Fiji Police Force now has 1253 women officers, with one serving as Assistant Commissioner of Police, five as Senior Superintendents, three as Superintendents, 18 as Assistant Superintendents and 54 as Inspectors.

Presenting at the launch of the Gender Barrier Assessment Project Report in Suva yesterday, Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu pledged to continue promoting women into leadership roles based on merit while assuring that all allegations against police officers would be investigated.

“I’m always encouraging women leadership within the Fiji Police Force and I’m glad to promote a few to the leadership roles as I took over as the Commissioner of Police and more to come based on your performance,” he said.

“In regard to all the allegations against the police, I am happy for all these things to be coming up now and I again would like to reassure members of the public any reports against any police officers will be investigated.

“That’s my reassurance again today.”

Speaking after the launch of the Gender Barrier Assessment Project report, Mr Tudravu also revealed plans to establish a dedicated peacekeeping school as an extension of the Police Academy to strengthen pre-deployment training for officers.

“I’m intending to establish just as an extended arm of our police academy, a peacekeeping school to assist our pre-deployment training.

“I see that is the future for the Fiji Police in terms of peacekeeping and to also support our women in peacekeeping duties, regionally and internationally.”

He said the force currently conducted pre-deployment training at the academy but lacked a dedicated facility.

“We normally train our pre-deployment at the academy.”

“We don’t have a special facility for that.”
