Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka – FIJI GOVT

GOVERNMENT is now considering only one candidate for the position of Attorney-General, with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka clarifying once again that no member of Cabinet or Government is qualified for the role.

The clarification follows Mr Rabuka’s earlier comments about Information Minister Lynda Tabuya’s possible consideration for the position, which were subsequently incorrectly reported by some media outlets as confirmation that she had been shortlisted.

Mr Rabuka explained that his earlier comments referred to the initial consideration of Government members to determine their eligibility for the position, with Ms Tabuya among those considered.

He said Ms Tabuya was among those “initially” considered as part of a process to identify a suitable candidate, but the Government had since looked beyond its own ranks.

“All members of Government have been assessed for eligibility before the search was narrowed to one candidate,” Mr Rabuka said.

He said the candidate had been vetted, but did not disclose the person’s identity, adding that there was no set timeline for the appointment, which would be finalised as soon as possible.

“The process is ongoing.”
