Health Minister Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete has pleaded with the public not to light fires near hospitals.

His plea follows an incident at the Savusavu Hospital two weeks ago where patients had to be transferred to the Labasa and Nabouwalu hospitals because smoke from burning rubbish had entered the hospital premises.

“So we had to transfer the patients because patients can become unwell,” he said.

“It also poses significant health issues when transferring patients to Labasa and Nabouwalu hospitals.”

Dr Waqainabete said plans were also in place for the maintenance of the Labasa Hospital.

“We already have plans to do work in certain areas of the Labasa Hospital and we will carry that out soon.”
