The tents at Lautoka’s Fiji Emergency Medical Assistance Team (FEMAT) field hospital can withstand rain but not a tropical cyclone, says FEMAT head Dr Luke Nasedra.

He made these comments in light of the changing weather patterns experienced a few days ago.

“If the winds are too strong, we will have to pull down and transfer all patients to either Ba Hospital or Nadi Hospital,” Dr Nasedra said. “This is already in our strategic plans.

“The facility has catered for the 25 beds that it was planned for. The rest of the beds included in the plan is at the new Ba Hospital.”

Dr Nasedra said they had 28 admissions this week and have had 78 admissions so far.

He added they had conducted 35 surgical operations since opening its doors on May 9.

The FEMAT field hospital and the MV Veivueti were activated to support healthcare management strategies within the Lautoka containment area after the Lautoka Hospital went on a total lockdown earlier this month.
