COMMISSIONER of Police Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho has confirmed that a number of people have been taken in for questioning by police for alleged rumors of a civil unrest and a disturbance that has caused fear among people.
Speaking to the media in Suva yesterday, Brig Gen said a total of 2000 police officers would be deployed around the country to monitor polling stations.
Brig Gen Qiliho said security was in good hands and under control for the General Election today.
He said that senior police officers would be deployed to take charge in monitoring voters and to ensure they are provided safety on elections day.
Brig Gen Qiliho has advised people to refrain from listening to rumors.
“I am not worried about rumor mongrels. I am just telling the people of Fiji don’t worry about it, don’t believe in rumors,” he claimed/
“We have picked up a few people who might be creating fear in the society with the rumors they are creating. These are in relation to the rumors of civil unrest and disturbances.
“We have picked them, we will go through the process of questioning, if they need to be charged then they will be charged.”
Brigadier General Qiliho also said they would bring in the Republic of the Fiji Military Forces if the need arises and they have had exchanges of information and intelligence leading up to election day today.
“I want to reiterate again to all Fijians, forget the rumors, we are in control of the security situation here, go out and vote the Government you want, we will provide you with security you need,” he added.
