The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) Naval Division has completed activation training for a new fast patrol craft donated by the Government of Japan, marking a significant boost to Fiji’s maritime security.
The vessel, provided under Japan’s Official Security Assistance (OSA) framework, arrived in Fiji earlier last week, with naval personnel now fully trained to operate and maintain the craft ahead of its formal handover next week.
In a statement, the RFMF said the training had equipped Fiji Navy personnel with the skills required to “operate, maintain and employ the craft safely and effectively in support of Fiji’s maritime-security responsibilities.”
“This enhanced capability will strengthen the RFMF’s ability to conduct maritime patrols, respond rapidly to incidents at sea, support search and rescue, protect Fiji’s maritime resources and contribute to whole-of-government maritime law-enforcement operations,” the military stated.
It also acknowledged Japan’s continued support in strengthening Fiji’s defence capabilities.
“The RFMF is grateful to the Government and people of Japan for their continued partnership, practical support and commitment to strengthening Fiji’s maritime security capability.”
