The Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) says it aims to assist 1000 children affected by super storm Yasa in Vanua Levu return to school.

Party leader Viliame Gavoka said they had launched an appeal aimed at helping cyclone-affected children.

“The party believes this is the time to focus on the children,” he said.

“I recently visited the North. It was a few days after STC Yasa and my heart went out to the people of the North that were devastated.

“The whole scene was heart wrenching and so for SODELPA, we acknowledge a lot of work is going in the background to rehabilitate those affected.

“This is the feedback from parents and teachers — there was a great need to help children get back to school.”

Mr Gavoka said SODELPA was focused on back to school assistance for children.

“We are aiming for 1000 students to be equipped going back to school and school starts on January 18.

“But we are geared up to raise funds for this initiative.”

He said party supporters local and abroad have begun raising funds.

“We are confident of meeting the target of assisting 1000 children in Vanua Levu.

“I therefore thank all those who have pledged support to sponsor a child and teachers for the new school year.”
