The traffic congestion problem in Savusavu has been described as a nightmare.
Resident Tony Millard said the roads were getting busier and parking has become a huge problem.
“It’s about safety and the risk to children,” Mr Millard said.
“Feels like the Government is doing nothing to address the issue.”
Mr Millard said installing parking meters was not an appropriate solution to the problem.
“Parking meters around the world often fail.
“The focus is often on making money, not fixing traffic or keeping people safe.”
He said zebra crossings were also becoming more dangerous, especially for children, and the national campaign on railway safety hasn’t reached enough people yet.
“We need real solutions to clear the roads and protect lives,” Mr Millard said.
In response, the Assistant Infrastructure Minister Naisa Tuinaceva said traffic and parking issues were the responsibility of the police and the Fiji Roads Authority.
Mr Tuinaceva said they were working to address the traffic problem across towns and cities in Fiji.
Savusavu Town Council chair Shankar Singh said designated areas have been allocated for parking, and that the council was exploring additional locations to accommodate increasing demand.
