SAVE the Children Fiji is reminding parents and guardians to be vigilant and take precautions all the time of their children now that the second term school break is near.
Save the Children Fiji CEO, Iris Low-McKenzie stressed this in a statement issued today highlighting that exams are nearly coming to an end, and children are looking forward to school breaks and upcoming festivals.
“As we approach the school break and also the upcoming festivals where most of us look forward to, we must remember to be vigilant and alert at all times especially with our children. Children’s safety and protection should always be our priority,” Ms Low-McKenzie said.
She said one simple tip for keeping children safer is ensuring that every child remembers the parents’ full names and their mobile numbers by heart – that way tracing your loved ones will be much quicker.
“Yesterday we had a case reported on local news where a child was found walking alone in Nausori, this is really concerning as we all know what could happen to the child,” she said.
“Given the growing rates of abuse and sexual violence, most victims are children and this is a concern,” Ms Low-McKenzie added.
She commended the Fiji Police Force for their tireless effort in ensuring the safety of the general public especially in this time of the year where thousands of people are moving about for various conferences and festivals.
“We must all work together to ensure that this school break and the festival is safe and enjoyed by all,”
