Opposition Leader raises alarm over disbanded Narcotics Bureau, demands full transparency

Leader of the Opposition Inia Seruiratu has expressed deep concern following revelations that police officers from the Narcotics Bureau were themselves implicated in drug-related activities.

He said this development is deeply troubling.

“It exposes a serious breach of public trust and raises fundamental questions about the integrity of our law enforcement institutions,” he said.

“The people of Fiji deserve a police force that is beyond reproach, one that protects communities rather than participates in the very crimes it is mandated to prevent.”

Mr Seruiratu has called on the Government to urgently provide answers and restore public confidence, calling for a full report into the extent of police involvement in narcotics crimes, including accountability measures for implicated officers.

He also wants a clear and credible plan to rebuild trust, incorporating robust vetting processes, anti-corruption safeguards, and independent oversight of specialised policing units.

“While the disbandment of the Bureau may have been necessary, it cannot be the end of the story,” he stressed.

“Fiji is facing a drug crisis of national proportions. Dismantling a key enforcement unit without presenting a credible replacement strategy risks emboldening criminal networks.”

The Opposition Leader further warned that without swift, transparent, and structured action, the gap left by the Bureau’s closure could undermine national efforts to combat drug trafficking and abuse.

“The Opposition will raise this matter in Parliament,” he said.

“We will continue to demand transparency, accountability, and urgent action to protect the safety and future of all Fijians.”
