A few days after a video went viral on social media showing violence being inflicted by a group of schoolboys on another fellow student at an all-boys school in Tailevu, the Online Safety Commission has finally broken its silence on the matter.

In a statement issued today since the video went viral on Facebook last weekend, the Commission said it was aware of that “violent video”.

Commissioner Anne Dunn said steps were immediately taken by the OSC to ensure the video link was brought to Facebook’s attention for removal while Police investigated the incident.

She said the video received thousands of views after being shared widely by Facebook users prior to its removal from the platform on Monday, March 2, 2020.

“Images and social media links of the alleged individuals in the video continue to be circulated on social media platforms to date,” Ms Dunn said.

“We urge (members of) the public to refrain from sharing images of the bullying incident captured on video along with any speculative information that has not been confirmed by relevant authorities.”

Police have confirmed the incident recorded in the video took place in 2019.

“Investigations are still underway and the OSC will continue to assist with the investigation wherever possible.”
