Oceania AFL Cup returns, Nauru faces Fiji first up

The Nauru side is gearing up for their first match of the AFL Oceania Cup competition when the take on Fiji at Albert Park in Suva today.

The tournament will showcase under-16 athletes from Tonga, Nauru, Papua New Guinea and Fiji, featuring boys and girls teams.

The competition makes a return after four years – the last held in Suva in 2019 with Nauru beating Fiji in the final.

Nauru coach German Grundler expressed his confidence in the team, stating that the boys were ready to go.

“Despite the challengers faced during the preparation with players getting sick and a few injuries, the boys still managed to come back for training,” said Grundler.

“The boys have been training tirelessly for this moment and are eager to show their best performance on the field,” he added.

“With our first game against Fiji, it is just the beginning of a series of tough matches. We will need to work hard to win our matches and to reach the final on Friday.”

Grundler said the AFL Oceania Cup was a chance for his side to compete at a competition and gain invaluable experience.
