HISTORY has taken Navatu Secondary School this far. This afternoon, the north gets its chance to demand more.
When Navatu runs onto the field for its Vodafone Super Deans under-19 semi-final against Ratu Kadavulevu School (RKS), it will carry something far heavier than a rugby ball and the weight of expectation.
It will carry the pride of an entire region.
For a school that does not have its own rugby ground or gymnasium, simply reaching the national semi-finals is an extraordinary achievement.
But Navatu is not travelling this far to make up the numbers.
The boys have already toppled one of the southern zone’s established giants Suva Grammar School.
Now they stand 80 minutes from a place in the Deans final and within touching distance of creating a moment that could change the way northern schoolboy rugby is viewed.
For principal Kiniviliame Naciqa, this journey is about much more than one rugby team.
“This victory means far more than reaching a semi-final. It represents belief, hard work, discipline, sacrifice and unity,” Naciqa said.
“It shows that northern students can compete with the best in the country and has become a source of pride and inspiration for the entire North.”
The quarter-final victory over Suva Grammar was the defining statement.
It showed that Navatu’s rise was not built on reputation or resources, but on the character of its players.
“It showed the character, resilience and belief of our boys,” Naciqa said.
“They trusted their preparation, stayed disciplined and worked for each other.”
