The 2021 Long Course grand prix scheduled to begin today at the Damodar City Aquatic Centre has been postponed to next week.
With over 50 swimmers to compete from nine of Fiji’s elite swim clubs, the anticipation of cyclone expected to form this weekend has forced Swimming Fiji officials to postpone the meet to the following weekend.
“Due to the bad weather and for safety of all LCGP 1 will be postponed to the February 6,” confirmed Swimming Fiji operations manager Trisa Dunn.
Dunn said preparations had been set in place with swimmers looking forward to a good meet, but the wellbeing of athletes remained paramount.
Meanwhile, Fiji swimmers who have still yet to qualify for a spot at the Tokyo Olympics may have a chance in April. Team Fiji chef de mission Patrick Bower said they were in the process of requesting for another sanctioned event as to give Fiji swimmers another chance.
“After the last Long Course Open Nationals, sanctioned by the swimming world’s governing body FINA, none of the swimmers have yet met the FINA A and B qualifying time standards,” Bower said.
“Fiji Swimming is currently in the process of requesting FINA to sanction another event which is to be held in April.”
