A NEW non-profit organisation will help youth and government in the fight against drugs, says Policing Minister Ioane Naivalurua.
Mr Naivalurua said Blue Light Fiji had now been formally established and would work closely with the Fiji Police Force to address social issues affecting communities.
He made the comments after meeting Blue Light Fiji representatives to discuss the organisation’s way forward and how it could strengthen its operations.
“They were basically seeking my thoughts and my views, and a bit of advice on how they should shape the organisation moving forward,” he said.
He said the organisation had tabled its constitution and was on the right track, but needed to establish a strong foundation based on good governance.
“Good governance calls for transparency, regulations and regulations that will guide them forward.”
He said Blue Light Fiji was expected to sign a memorandum of understanding with the police in the coming days.
“I think they’ll do that with the Commissioner of Police.”
He said the organisation could offer significant support, particularly through community involvement in tackling social problems.
“It’s an NGO that can offer a lot, but at the end of the day, it’s about community again, the ability of the community to support the police and together to fight the social ills that we now encounter.”
Further discussions are expected after Blue Light Fiji formally writes to the minister.
