Cabinet has approved a submission from the Ministry of Fisheries for payments of access fees in fishing areas.

Minister responsible Kalaveti Ravu said qoliqoli customary rights owners were not paid any access fees for the past six to seven years after the past government removed it.

But this year, he said the policy would be reintroduced for the sake of qoliqoli customary rights owners.

“Cabinet has approved it and we will soon have a consultation with stakeholders before it’s brought to pass.”

The only payments fishermen and fishing companies paid after the removal of this policy were fishing license fees with the Government and nothing to the qoliqoli customary owners.
