A NEW trash boom has been installed at the Nasekula River in Labasa as part of efforts to stop waste from flowing into the ocean and protect Fiji’s marine environment.
Trash Boom Pacific data officer Luse Deve said the installation marked a major milestone for the Northern Division, being the first of its kind in the North and the 13th installed nationwide.
“This is not only our first in the North, but also the 13th trash boom installed in Fiji. That makes this a major milestone,” she said.
She said the river collects waste from several surrounding communities and settlements, including Nacula Village, Naqai, Nailawa, Tovata, parts of the housing area in Naodamu, and nearby industrial zones such as the bus yard area.
“For too long, this waterway has carried waste from our communities and industries towards the ocean. That changes from now onwards.”
She said the project was also aimed at protecting the Great Sea Reef, locally known as the Cakaulevu Reef, which supports food security and livelihoods in Fiji.
