THE Nadi Rugby Union marked its 68 years of service last Saturday at Koroivolu Park in Nadi.
The anniversary comes at an important time for Nadi Rugby, with its senior men’s and women’s team currently leading the Skipper Cup and Subrails Marama Cup standings while the U20 sits at second place heading into the quarterfinal.
Nadi Rugby Union vice-president Jeff Tamata said the milestone was a reflection of the contribution made by generations of players, administrators, supporters and stakeholders.
The anniversary also provides an opportunity for the union to recognise Nadi Rugby legends and the foundation built by those who have served Nadi Rugby over the years.
Tamata said the current position of the union’s teams was the result of planning, leadership and teamwork.
He credited Nadi Rugby Union president Ponijese Lou for his leadership and vision, while also acknowledging the players, coaches, stakeholders and supporters who have contributed to the union’s progress.
The senior team’s position at the top of the Skipper Cup standings has added significance to the anniversary celebrations.
The Under-20 and Marama teams are also in contention, both sitting second on the respective standings.
Tamata said the union’s progress had been built around proper planning and preparation, including work carried out during the off-season.
“We have taken this into consideration when we were doing our consultation and likewise our planning before the start of this season,” he said.
The 68th anniversary also comes as Nadi Rugby continues to expand its role in the community.
The union recently visited Dilkusha Home and Loloma Home as part of its strategic plan to reach out to the community, while also promoting messages against drug abuse.
For Tamata, the anniversary is therefore not only about celebrating the union’s past but also looking ahead to its future and its responsibility to the next generation of players.
With three teams still in strong positions heading into the final round, Nadi Rugby will hope the anniversary weekend provides another reason for its supporters to turn up in numbers and celebrate the union’s long-standing contribution to Fijian rugby.
As part of the celebration, the anniversary started with the march from Nadi Town end to Koroivolu Park followed by a church service then a visit by the Nadi Rugby legends to the union’s land in Voivoi Legalgea.
The union celebrated another milestone in its long history bringing together former players for a remarkable reunion.
