The murder trial of Henri Lusaka is expected to begin in June.

The matter was called before Justice Kulatunga Mudiyanselage Gihan Himanshu Kulatunga in the High Court in Suva for pre-trial conference.

Mr Lusaka is alleged to have murdered his wife, Jennifer Ann Downes, at their Suva flat in 2019.

The trial began in April last year but was cut short because of the second COVID-19 outbreak.

Assistant director for Public Prosecutions Elizabeth Rice appeared for the state while Laurel Vaurasi appeared for the accused.

Ms Rice said that after coming to agreement with the defence on certain issues, the witness list was reduced to 20 and that number could be reduced further.

She also said that two witnesses who were currently overseas would testify at the trial.

Ms Vaurasi said the defence was relying on diminished responsibility, and had always objected to the caution interview because there was no agreement that he killed her in the interview.

She also asked the court to provide a French interpreter for Mr Lusaka’s benefit.

The three-week trial will begin in June. The matter was adjourned to March 2 for another pre-trial conference.
