Opposition Member of Parliament Vijay Nath has called for urgent government intervention following a rise in robberies and assaults targeting taxidrivers in Nausori, warning that the town is becoming increasingly unsafe.
Mr Nath said the attacks were no longer limited to the late hours of the night, with drivers now being targeted in broad daylight.
“What is most concerning is that these attacks are no longer confined to the late hours of the night,” he said.
“Taxidrivers are now being targeted during broad daylight, creating an atmosphere of fear among those who provide an essential public service.
“Many drivers are refusing to operate after 7pm because they no longer feel safe.”
He said the issue extended beyond the taxi industry, affecting commuters, students, businesses and the wider community who relied on taxi services.
Calling on the Government and the Fiji Police Force to respond swiftly, Mr Nath urged police to increase their visibility through regular foot and mobile patrols in crime hotspots, particularly around the Nausori bus stand, the mini-bus stand and surrounding areas.
He also called for tougher enforcement against public drunkenness and disorderly behaviour, saying existing laws should be consistently applied to remove those responsible for criminal activity.
Mr Nath said Government should also work with the taxi industry to make safety technology, including CCTV cameras, GPS tracking systems and emergency alert devices, more accessible to operators who could not afford them.
“The people of Nausori have the right to feel safe in their own town. The time for action is now.”
