DESPITE losing her 13-year-old son to cancer two years ago, Miriama Tabua continues to support WOWS Kids Fiji, honouring a promise he made before his death.
Mrs Tabua was among families, supporters and members of the public who took part in the WOWS Kids Fiji walkathon at Albert Park in Suva on Saturday, marking National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month with a 4km walk and Zumba with Josh.
Her son, Isoa Bale, was diagnosed with muscle cancer in 2024, a rare and aggressive form of cancer. Doctors gave the family six months to prepare for his death, but he lived for another year and six months.
“I thank God that he exceeded the doctors’ estimate and got to spend one year and six months with us, his family,” she said.
Mrs Tabua said Isoa’s final wish was for his family to continue supporting WOWS Kids Fiji and its annual walk.
“His last wish was that if anything happened to him, we would always support WOWS Kids Fiji and continue the walk.”
She said WOWS Kids Fiji supported the family throughout Isoa’s illness, including transport to hospital, visits, diapers and bringing joy to her son during his final days.
“He knew his time was near and he gave a special thank you to Aunty Mere Williams and Aunty Vitalina Qalobula for helping our family so much,” she added.
Mrs Tabua now shares her son’s story in villages and women’s groups, urging parents not to ignore persistent sickness and to seek further medical tests when necessary.
“I always tell parents in the village that I should be an example to them because I lost my son to cancer.
“I urge the citizens of Fiji and organisations to please support WOWS Kids Fiji. I have experienced first-hand the good this organisation has done for parents, caregivers and children living with cancer.”
