‘MOE still rebuilding schools’

The Ministry of Education is still rebuilding schools four years after Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston made landfall in Fiji.
This, according to Education Minister Rosy Akbar while commissioning new school classrooms at Naivicula District School in Wainibuka, Tailevu.
Ms Akbar said Government spent more than $220 million in their rebuilding process. She said a total of 495 schools were damaged post-TC Winston.
“Every facility that we had sustained damage,” she said.
Ms Akbar said the newly-built Naivicula District School was also destroyed by Severe TC Winston.
She said education was pivotal for students, adding it was also important for students to be studying in proper classrooms.
“We believe that when we have the right building and the new infrastructure and people, education will progress.”
She thanked the Japanese government which gave $190,000 towards the rebuilding of the new classrooms.
Ms Akbar said $433,000 was given by the Government to build the school’s new dining hall and kindergarten.
School manager Ananaiasa Taburokoro thanked the Fijian Government and Japanese government for their contribution towards the school.
