The Ministry of Employment received 48 complaints from injured workers on the non-payment of the two-thirds weekly wages in the last financial year.

Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh told Parliament on Monday that through employer engagements and joint meetings, 44 cases were resolved, while four cases remained under legal review by the Office of the Solicitor-General.

“Linking compensation with enforcement promotes more responsible behaviour from employers and school authorities,” Mr Singh said.

He highlighted that transferring the processing of employment and school accident cases to the ministry saved the Government $1.2million annually.

“There is no more outsourcing to other service providers, and the entire processing is done by my ministry.

“This August House will note that in the five years that it was outsourced, the people in the Government have lost $6million. This could have been saved.”

Mr Singh said the entire exercise was now carried by the ministry and the staff in the ministry were competent.

“The same staff who had been there (with ACCF) for all this while are the ones who are actually carrying out the responsibility.”
