The Coalition Government is committed to developing a competitive and sustainable fisheries sector.
Fisheries and Forestry Minister Alitia Bainivalu said this at the handing over of tilapia fishponds to the Nairairai Development Cooperative of Nasautoka Village in Tailevu recently.
“Its vision is to transform commercial aquaculture into a profitable, sustainable, and environmentally-friendly activity for farmers, producing high-quality and world-class brand aquatic products now and in the future,” Ms Bainivalu said.
“Under the Aquaculture Development Plan 2024–2028, nine key aquaculture species are to be developed at industry level to drive economic growth, improve livelihood and food security, and support community engagement.
“One of these key species is the tilapia.”
Ms Bainivalu thanked the Government of Japan for supporting the ministry in implementing its commitment at the grassroots level.
“Your support in establishing this tilapia farm further demonstrates our strong partnership and cooperation in improving grassroots livelihood in Fiji.
“Establishing this tilapia farm is a testament to the successful work and cooperation between donors, the Government and communities.”
The project cost $47,068 for the three fishponds, a drainage system and feed.
