voters are being urged to think carefully about their choices at the next general election.
Sugar Minister Chgaran Jeath Singh said votes could be wasted if people support candidates or parties unlikely to meet the required threshold.
He said voters should look beyond campaign promises and assess the record and background of those seeking political office.
“I am simply trying to advise voters to think wisely and elect someone who can really represent them properly, rather than people giving false promises,” he said.
The minister said voters should consider supporting parties that had demonstrated their ability to deliver for the country.
“They should support the Government and the parties that have delivered results.”
Asked whether smaller political parties could contribute to vote splitting, he said some would fail to meet the required threshold.
“I suspect they will not meet the threshold, and their votes could therefore be wasted.”
He said being popular on social media was different from running a government.
“They (voters) have to assess their background, what they have done in life, and whether they are going into politics to serve or to be served.”
He said the election would most likely be held in February.
