Minister for Public Enterprises Charan Jeath Singh has rejected allegations by the Fiji Labour Party that a police mobile post stationed near his sugar cane farm in Waiqele, Labasa, is providing him with special protection at taxpayers’ expense.
The Fiji Labour Party had questioned why the Police mobile hut was located outside the Minister’s farm, alleging that officers had been stationed there around the clock for about a month and asking whether the arrangement amounted to special treatment.
The party called on Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu to explain why the Minister’s farm was receiving what it described as special protection while thousands of other cane farmers in Labasa did not.
It also argued that, as a prosperous businessman, Singh could afford to hire private security if he required protection for his personal property.
Responding to the allegations, Singh said the police post was not established solely for his benefit but was there to serve the wider farming community in the Waiqele sector.
“Chaudhry, that police post is not only protecting my farm but on request of other Waiqele sector farmers. The Police happen to have based their caravan next to my farm owned by another farmer.”
