The Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) is expected to crush around 1.4 milllion tonnes of cane by the end of the 2021 crushing season.

FSC chief executive Bhan Pratap Singh explained this was because the three sugar mills had been operating well over the past few months.

“The three mills have been operating well and the focus has been to improve the daily crushing rate and sugar recovery,” he said.

“The three mills are expected to crush a total of around 1.4 million tonnes of cane this season.”

At the start of the crushing season, the FSC had set a target for each mill with Lautoka anticipated to crush 580,000 tonnes of cane while Ba’s Rarawai mill was targeting 480,000 tonnes.

Ba sugarcane farmer Arun Sharma said despite the challenges faced by many farmers during this crushing season, growers had been cooperating with authorities to ensure maximum harvesting yields.

He said it was encouraging that farmers were contributing to the 1.4 million tonne target.
