VICKY Naicker’s redundancy from the Fiji Sugar Corporation came three months before his wedding and the Penang resident is now faced with new challenges to save and earn enough to see the marriage ceremony through.
Having worked for nine years for FSC, Mr Naicker came home with $5045.
“I am about to get married and this money won’t be able to meet all the expenses related to the ceremony,” he said.
He has queried with a bank to obtain a loan for his wedding.
“They have said they can’t give a loan since I am unemployed.”
The 30-year-old has started driving a family-owned carrier to cover for the $150 he used to get weekly at FSC.
“I was the sole earner in the family and bought all the groceries and paid all the utility bills with the money I earned at FSC.
“I am now at the carrier base 12 to 14 hours a day hoping to earn enough for a day that pays for all the responsibility I have.”
Mr Naicker is the third generation in his family to have joined FSC, after his father Prakash Naicker and grandfather Mr Narayan.
“When they told me we will be going home, I didn’t want to leave but we had no option.”
He has also applied for a driving job in a government department in Rakiraki and is hopeful he will be hired.
