GOVERNMENT will look for a new boat landing site for islanders in the Macuata maritime zone who travel regularly to Labasa Town.

This follows requests from the people of Mali for a proper landing after boats from the island and nearby areas have been forced to berth beneath the Labasa Bridge.

Speaking during the Mali district meeting in Matailabasa last Thursday, Mali district representative Seru Moce said the current boat landing site was unsafe.

Mr Moce said islanders had no other choice but to use the small area under the bridge which was unsafe and hazardous.

Most of the time, Mr Moce said, passengers travelling to Labasa Town from Udu, Mali and Kia had to berth at the current site of the extended Labasa market, but have been forced to find space as most of the place was taken up by fish sellers from the islands.

He said they needed Government to look into the concerns as it would ease transportation problems faced by people of both islands.

He added that women, children and the elderly continued to suffer from the lack of a proper facility as they had to make do with the small busy space where boats were currently berthing.

In response, assistant roko tui Macuata Eroni Matalau said they would look into the concerns.

Mr Matalau said they were aware of the concerns raised.
