MAINTAINING unity should be the core desire of the Methodist church, says outgoing church president of the Methodist Church in Fiji and Rotuma the Reverend Dr Epineri Vakadewavosa.

He also reiterated that Jesus, in his last prayer prayed that his followers might be unified, bearing witness to God’s love.

Mr Vakadewavosa centred his sermon around this message during the induction service for the newly-elected leaders and president of the Methodist Church in Fiji and Rotuma, the Reverend Ili Vunisuwai.

He said numerous issues such as the difference in religious beliefs and also various views in politics could cause division.

Thus, Mr Vakadewavosa said it was imperative for the church and its leaders to remember that God’s word could only make an impact in people’s lives if unity was the core desire of the church in Fiji.

Mr Vakadewavosa also highlighted that the church has maintained a good relationship with the Government and also this nation because it has been adhering to what God desires and that is the need to stay united.

The Reverend Iliesa Naivalu has been elected the new general secretary of the church while the Reverend Semisi Turagavou was elected his deputy.

Dozens of people were present during the induction service at the Centenary Methodist Church in Suva including the head of the Catholic Church in Fiji, Archbishop Peter Loy Chong.
