Literacy and comprehension gaps from primary and secondary education are carrying over into tertiary studies, Fiji National University has observed.
Acting Dean of the College of Humanities, Education and Law at FNU Dr Joseph Veramu said the university had observed challenges among some students particularly at first-year level in reading comprehension, academic writing, research and critical analysis.
His comments follow the release of the Pacific Islands Literacy and Numeracy Assessment report, which raised concerns about literacy and numeracy outcomes across the Pacific.
While Fiji’s 2025 national findings are yet to be released by the Ministry of Education, Mr Veramu said the regional findings highlighted concerns relevant to students entering tertiary education.
“Reading with understanding is a skill developed through language learning. If not explicitly taught at earlier levels, students may struggle to master it at university,” he said.
Mr Veramu also referred to recent FNU data, saying it showed that while many students adjusted successfully to university-level study, some first-year entrants required additional support.
“Recent data indicates that while many students adapt successfully, a proportion of first-year entrants require additional support in academic reading and writing. These findings inform the university’s ongoing investment in literacy initiatives.
“Literacy and comprehension gaps from primary and secondary education can carry over into tertiary studies. This highlights the importance of strengthening literacy across all levels of Fiji’s education system.”
Mr Veramu said strong reading comprehension and critical thinking were essential for university.
“Literacy lies at the heart of student understanding and achievement.
“FNU recognises that literacy is not only about reading and writing, but also about the ability to interpret, evaluate, and apply knowledge in diverse academic and professional contexts.”
He said FNU regularly monitored student performance through diagnostic assessments and progression tracking.
FNU has established a Literacy and Numeracy Hub offering modules, workshops, tutoring, counselling and learning support across its campuses.
