At 21, Leona Douglas is stepping onto the Hibiscus stage with a purpose that goes beyond the crown — to speak up for those who cannot speak or be seen, and to use the platform to create opportunities for Fiji’s youth.
Born in New Zealand and raised in Fiji, Ms Leona moved with her family to Taveuni as a young child before settling in Suva, where she completed her schooling.
Her journey growing up in Fiji has shaped her belief that young people are central to the country’s future.
“The youth are our future here in Fiji, and they possess immense talent capable of taking us one step further,” she said.
“They can help Fiji grow.”
Through the Miss Hibiscus platform, Leona hopes to empower young people, bridge gaps and shine a light on their potential.
Joining the pageant was initially daunting, with Leona admitting she was nervous about having “all eyes on you most of the time”.
After reflecting on her reasons for entering, she decided to put her fears aside and focus on those who could benefit from the platform.
“I chose to think about the people who need this platform, those who will benefit from it.”
