THE Lautoka netball contingent produced a commendable outing at the Crest Fiji Primary Schools Netball Tournament in Labasa.
Two of its teams booked spots in the finals, the under-10 and U12 sides.
Both teams went on to win their respective divisions.
The team manager Lanieta Takala said the team underwent extensive preparation both on and off the court, with a strong focus on physical, mental, spiritual and financial readiness.
“We really had to prepare well, physically, mentally, spiritually, and financially,” she said.
Takala each player was initially levied $250, but after a school contribution of $60 per child.
“The contingent consisted of 144 girls across two teams per grade from U9 to U14, supported by 42 teachers and parents who played a key role in the campaign.
“The parents really worked together with us.”
To assist families, the team organised a walkathon to help raise funds for players who came from different backgrounds and were unable to meet the full cost.
“Whatever was collected helped reduce the burden for them.”
On the competition itself, she said the girls showed resilience against strong opposition.
She said regular club competitions also contributed to player development.
“Most of these players compete in club games every Saturday and during the holidays, which really helped their development.”
Despite the challenges, Takala said she was satisfied with the overall performance and growth of the team, adding that unity among players from different schools was a major strength.
